What is Temping?

Temping is the term used to describe temporary work. Temporary work is based on a non-fixed term and can last for any length of time. You are employed on a daily contract.

Employers recruit temps for a number of reasons: to boost productivity at busy times, to cover staff absence and maternity leave, for particular projects, to fill gaps in expertise and to analyse employee performance with a view to permanent employment.

As well as offering flexibility, temping enables you to learn new skills, experience new industries and meet new people.

You will need a National Insurance number to work as a temp. Further information, including details about how to apply for a number if you do not have one, is available on the directgov website.

  Why Temp?

Temping offers a realistic alternative to permanent work and has a great many benefits.

  Pay and Benefits

As a temp, you are taxable under the pay as you earn scheme.

Employers increasingly recognise the value of temps, so there is often a high demand and because temporary work is based on an hourly rate, the more hours you work, the more you get paid.

Under the Working Time regulations, temporary workers are entitled to up to four weeks paid leave per annum. This is paid at the time your holiday is taken and is not included in your hourly rate. There are also conditional entitlements to sick pay when you are a temp.
